The team has 9 members, young and not-so-young, but needs more to learn the ropes to maintain this ancient English tradition for years to come.
Sunday service ringing is from 9.00 am to 9.25 am and from 6.00 pm to 6.25 pm. On Thursdays the ringers meet for practice from 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm in the Tower’s Ringing Chamber, frequently followed by a quick drink up the road. Weddings, for which the ringers are paid, keep the team busy, especially during the summer months … four weddings in a weekend has been known.
Visitors are always welcome to watch the ringers; trial lessons can be arranged – contact details below.
St Mary’s has a large set of handbells for musical tune ringing; new recruits are needed to re-establish a team, which in recent years has had over 250 engagements.
