Downright Special FridaysDownright Special – building a brighter future for children with Downs Syndrome. Downright Special meet every Friday morning in term time and is a friendly and welcoming group for children and parents alike. Families from all over Hull and East Yorkshire attend, with children ranging from birth to around age 5. Other pre-school siblings are welcome to attend and sessions are free to all. On Friday afternoons, we also run our Downright Special Education intervention sessions for school age children age 5-11. These older children attend with their teaching assistants. There are a wide range of toys for the children to play with as well as a fabulous soft play room with ball pool and slide especially designed for young children learning to explore and developing their strengths, Children have fun whilst participating in ‘lesson time’, split into small groups focused on improving speech and language, led by our specialist teacher. At the end of the session, we all get together for ‘Magic Bag’ – singing and signing time. Just as importantly, there’s lots of time for parents to chat over coffee, catch up, share experiences and celebrate all of our children’s achievements. There are also regular visits from professionals including the local NHS Physiotherapy team, a speech therapist and a doctor, all of whom are available for informal chats and advice. Why not join us?
