The society was formed following a public meeting held in Beverley Library in February 1977. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength with regular monthly meetings taking place in Beverley, Hull and Bridlington as well as our branch in Scarborough. These meetings may include a speaker on some family or local history topic or could take the form of a workshop, walkabout or social event.
Our award-winning journal called the Banyan Tree is published quarterly and is distributed to all members. It contains articles, news, a Help Wanted section and a “spotlight” piece about a particular village within our area.
The society is fortunate to have its own research facilities housed within the historic Carnegie Heritage Centre in Hull. We also operate regular Helpdesks at libraries throughout our area so there are plenty of opportunities to come and meet us.
