The school has been established since 1981. Work studied by pupils is that of the bbodance formerly British Ballet Organisation (B.B.O.). Children are taken from the age of 3 years and upwards and mainly study Ballet, Tap and Modern, although we do cover Musical Theatre, Character, National and Stage Work.
Lessons are held at St Thomas’ Church, Hotham Road South, Hull, HU5 5JY. We have two studios so that two sets of lessons can go on at any one time.
The school studies the bbodance syllabus of which all teachers are registered members. The school is also a member of Dance UK and Foundation for Community Dance.
The school has been providing fun-filled lessons to pupils for over 40 years in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Musical Theatre, National and Character Dance. A show takes place each year in aid of charity, in which all pupils perform, which is in the school Easter holidays. Part of the show includes the pupils learning Drama and Acting skills. Other demonstrations are provided by the school at charity events during the year.
Examinations can be taken in Ballet, Tap and Modern when the appropriate level has been attained.
Various dance festivals/competitions held in our area are entered by pupils showing an interest.
For lessons pupils should always be dressed correctly, wearing a black lycra sleeveless round scooped neck leotard, black lycra leggings, and crossover, with black leather ballet shoes. Younger pupils require black tap shoes and then white tap shoes are required as they progress through the syllabus. Hair should be worn in a bun where possible, otherwise tied back well off the face. No jewellery should be worn, with the exception of stud earrings. Boys – White T-shirt and black lycra leggings/cycling shorts, black ballet shoes, black tap shoes.
Dance has many benefits including feeling part of a dance family, learning the discipline of different dance genres and being part of a caring and healthy environment.
